Non-Surgical Options

For most people who have their first experience with neck or back pain, the main question that they often ask themselves is, "will I be able to get better without surgery?" Fortunately, the numbers are on your side. Over 95% of people who have neck or back pain do not need surgery, and they will get better with time.

In many instances, non-surgical treatment can provide good to excellent results in many patients. Some examples of non-operative treatments include: medications, physical therapy, chiropractics and exercise.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDS)

NSAIDs work by reducing inflammation and providing pain relief. Inflamed ligaments and joints can cause pain directly or by irritating nerves as they leave the spine. NSAIDs must be taken on a regular basis at high doses to have a true anti-inflammatory effect. Common, over the counter, NSAID'S are Ibuprofen and Naprosyn. The most common side effect of NSAID's is irritation of the stomach. A newer alternative to standard NSAID's are termed Cox2 inhibitors, which can be obtained with a prescription. They are less likely to cause irritation of the stomach, and have the benefit of once per day dosing. Learn more about Medications.

Physical Therapy (PT)

During physical therapy, different treatments such as applications of heat and cold, ultrasound, and massage are often incorporated to help alleviate pain and stiffness. Also, therapeutic exercise is often prescribed to build strength and increase range of motion, at the same time teaching the patients correct posture and relaxation techniques. Chiropractics

Chiropractors that specialize in the treatment of neck pain attempt to improve the function of the joints and the nervous system by adjusting vertebral subluxations. Manual spinal adjustments are the key to chiropractic treatment, and, in fact, the word "chiropractic" is derived from the two Greek words "cheiros" and "praktikos," which together mean, "done by hand." Exercise

Regular exercise is an essential part of having a healthy back. In the treatment of back pain, almost every healthcare provider agrees that exercise plays an important role in recovery. Every day we make demands on our bodies that can stress our backs. It's a well known fact that the more fit you are, and the stronger your back is, the more easily your body can deal with the stress and strain of every day activity.
